HTVB-50 Atmosphere Controlled Vibration Ball Milling Reactor with Programmable Heating to 500ºC and 3 Bar Pressure for CO2 Methanation Catalyst Activation

The HTVB-50 is designed to facilitate mechanochemical activation of catalysts under controlled atmospheres, specifically targeting the conversion of CO2 to methane. This vibration ball milling reactor integrates precise temperature and pressure control within a compact system, enabling researchers to simulate and accelerate catalytic reactions that require elevated temperatures up to 500ºC and pressures up to 3 bar. Its design supports gas flow through the milling chamber, allowing reactive atmospheres to be maintained during milling processes.

Operating on a vibration stage driven by a 24V DC motor, the HTVB-50 allows adjustable vibration speeds from 400 to 2000 RPM (6 to 33 Hz), accommodating various milling intensities. The reactor chamber, constructed from stainless steel 304, measures 55 mm internal diameter by 61 mm outer diameter and 100 mm depth, with a maximum material capacity of 200 ml including milling balls. Heating is applied externally via a ring heater, controlled by a programmable unit with ±1ºC accuracy, ensuring stable and reproducible thermal conditions. Gas inlet and outlet ports with valves enable controlled atmosphere experiments, with a maximum gas flow rate below 5 L/min and a working pressure limit of 0.3 MPa (3 bar) under standard configuration.

Typical Applications

The HTVB-50 is ideal for mechanochemical activation studies of catalysts, particularly for CO2 methanation research. It supports experiments requiring controlled reactive atmospheres, elevated temperatures, and precise milling conditions. This makes it suitable for catalyst development, materials synthesis, and gas-solid reaction investigations in academic and industrial laboratories.

Configuration & Operating Notes

The reactor includes a set of stainless steel milling balls (6–20 mm). Additional stainless steel or yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) balls can be ordered separately. The control unit is separate from the reactor, managing both temperature and vibration speed independently. Users must employ a two-stage gas regulator to ensure the maximum working pressure does not exceed 3 bar during operation. A thermocouple is not included but can be installed via the provided 1/4″ feedthrough flange. Optional upgrades for higher pressure operation (up to 20 bar) at reduced maximum temperatures are available at extra cost.
