MSK-HRP-1A Electric Hot Rolling Press with 4″ Width, Variable Speed, and 200°C Max Temperature for Battery Electrode Preparation

The MSK-HRP-1A is a compact hot rolling press engineered specifically for the preparation and densification of battery electrodes, particularly in lithium-ion battery research. This equipment is suitable for use both inside and outside glove-box environments due to its argon gas compatibility, enabled by a high torque DC motor. It is designed to improve the active material density of coated electrodes by applying controlled heat and pressure through its heated rollers.

This model features a pair of stainless steel rollers, each 96 mm in diameter and 100 mm in width, providing an effective rolling width of 96 mm. The rollers can be heated independently up to a maximum temperature of 200°C for short durations or 190°C for continuous operation, controlled precisely within ±1°C. The rolling gap is adjustable from 0 to 1.2 mm, allowing fine control over the final electrode thickness. A mechanical dial gauge is included for thickness measurement, with an optional digital micrometer upgrade available for enhanced accuracy.

Key Features

  • High torque 24 V DC motor with reducing gear for variable rolling speed up to 26 mm/s.
  • Dual independent temperature controllers for upper and lower rollers with 500 W heating elements each.
  • Stainless steel rollers with surface hardness of HRC 60-62, suitable for materials up to 50 HRC hardness.
  • Adjustable rolling gap from 0 to 1.2 mm with included mechanical dial gauge (0-3 mm range, 0.01 mm accuracy).
  • Argon gas compatibility for integration inside glove-box environments.
  • Two PTFE feeding boards included to facilitate sample feeding.
  • Optional roll-to-roll system available for automated film handling.

Typical Applications

This hot rolling press is primarily used in lithium-ion battery research to increase the density of active materials on electrodes after coating. It is suitable for pressing thin electrode sheets coated on copper or other current collectors, enabling thickness reduction and improved electrochemical performance. The device is also compatible with inert gas environments, making it ideal for glove-box integration during sensitive battery electrode fabrication.

Configuration & Operating Notes

The MSK-HRP-1A includes two PTFE feeding boards and a mechanical dial gauge for thickness measurement. A digital micrometer is available as an optional upgrade for higher precision. An optional roll-to-roll (R2R) system can be integrated to automate film unwinding and winding processes.

Users must clean the rollers with acetone after each use and apply anti-rust lubricant if the machine will be idle for extended periods. The rollers should not be used to press materials harder than 50 HRC to avoid damage. Multi-step thickness reduction is recommended, with decrements no greater than 0.02 mm per pass. Heating above 200°C is not advised as it may deform rollers and affect accuracy. Regular lubrication of roller bearings is suggested to prolong equipment lifespan.

Safety precautions include avoiding contact with heated or moving rollers and ensuring temperature calibration with a thermocouple calibrator to maintain accuracy. The equipment is CE certified, with additional certifications available upon request.
