MJ3SN-80 Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) Jar with Stainless Steel Jacket for SFM-3 & SFM-3-II Milling Machines
The MJ3SN-80 jar is designed for high-precision milling tasks requiring contamination-free processing, especially suited for air-sensitive or inorganic materials. It fits the MSK-SFM-3, MSK-SFM-3-F, and MSK-SFM-3-II milling machines, providing an abrasion-resistant alternative to zirconia jars. This jar’s silicon nitride composition ensures minimal wear and prevents iron or other inorganic contamination during milling.
Constructed from high-purity (>99.99%) silicon nitride with a hardness exceeding 8.5 Mohs and a density of approximately 3.7 g/cm³, the jar is encased in a stainless steel jacket to enhance durability and provide an air-tight seal. Two O-rings are included to maintain an inert atmosphere inside the jar, making it ideal for milling air-sensitive samples. The jar has an actual capacity of 84 ml, accommodating a variety of sample volumes.

Typical Applications
This jar is ideal for milling powders and materials that require contamination-free processing, such as air-sensitive compounds or inorganic substances where iron contamination must be avoided. Its abrasion resistance makes it suitable for prolonged milling cycles without significant wear.
Configuration & Operating Notes
- To minimize contamination, fill the jar to about one-third volume with powder before milling.
- Initial milling at low speed is recommended to allow sample coating on jar and balls, followed by higher speed milling.
- For air-sensitive materials, loading the jar and balls inside an inert gas glovebox is advised before milling in ambient conditions.
