MSK-SFM-3LN Liquid Nitrogen Cryogenic Rotor Mill with 5L Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Container and Programmable Speed Control

The MSK-SFM-3LN is engineered for precision cryogenic grinding of both soft and tough materials, enabling particle size reduction down to 1 micron at temperatures as low as -160°C. This capability is essential for applications requiring preservation of material properties sensitive to heat or oxidation during milling. The mill integrates a 5-liter stainless steel container with vacuum thermal insulation to maintain ultra-low temperatures using liquid nitrogen, ensuring consistent cryogenic conditions throughout the grinding process.

Operating with an anchor-type stainless steel rotor blade, the mill offers adjustable rotational speeds up to 1200 RPM, controlled via a programmable controller that allows customization of milling time, speed, and rotation direction to suit diverse sample requirements. The container is lined with PTFE to minimize contamination and resist corrosion. Temperature inside the container is continuously monitored by a thermocouple sensor, while liquid nitrogen flow is regulated by a CSA-certified cryogenic solenoid valve to maintain stable thermal conditions. The system accommodates input particles up to 20 mm and supports milling media loads up to 3.5 kg, with recommended ball diameters under 5 mm for optimal grinding efficiency.

Key Features

  • 5-liter SS 304 vacuum jacketed milling container with PTFE liner for corrosion resistance and contamination control

Typical Applications

This cryogenic rotor mill is ideal for grinding temperature-sensitive materials such as polymers, pharmaceuticals, food products, and rare earth or magnetic materials that require low-temperature processing to prevent degradation. It is also suitable for preparing samples for advanced material characterization or for producing fine powders in research and development settings.

Configuration & Operating Notes

The system requires an external liquid nitrogen supply and piping, which are not included and should be sourced locally. The vacuum pump for the container’s vacuum jacket is optional and must be ordered separately. Milling media such as zirconia balls can be selected based on application needs and are sold separately. The programmable controller enables customization of milling parameters to optimize results for different materials. For applications involving high viscosity pastes, the liquid nitrogen temperature control and solenoid valve can be removed to use the device as a mixer.
